Gojek lays off 430 employees after Facebook, Paypal investment

Since its launch in 2015, the Gojek app has helped bring hundreds of thousands of merchants onto its platform, giving them access to more than 170 million people across Southeast Asia.

Jakarta: Ride-hailing and digital payments platform Gojek that received funding from Facebook and Paypal earlier this month has laid off 430 employees, around 9 per cent of its total workforce.

The company announced to shut down its lifestyle division GoLife as well as its food court division GoFood Festival, reports The Jakarta Post.

Gojek currently operates in five countries in Southeast Asia, said it would focus on its core businesses which are ride-hailing service, food delivery and e-payment solutions.

"The biggest challenge is the remaining uncertainties in the future, and the hurtful fact is that this will forever change the way we operate our business and the products we offer," said CEOs Andre Soelistyo and Kevin Aluwi said in a joint statement late Tuesday.

In April, the company's senior management cut their salaries to allocate more than $7.09 million to help drivers and employees cope with poor demand during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With an aim to cement their position in the fast-growing digital payments market in Southeast Asia, Facebook and Paypal have invested in Gojek.

Matt Idema, Chief Operating Officer, WhatsApp, did not disclose the sum the company has invested in Gojek but said the move underscores Facebook's commitment to serving small businesses and helping bring them and their customers into the digital economy.

Since its launch in 2015, the Gojek app has helped bring hundreds of thousands of merchants onto its platform, giving them access to more than 170 million people across Southeast Asia. Its payments business processes billions of transactions each year and owns the largest e-wallet in Indonesia.

Singapore's Grab puts partnership with troubled Wirecard on hold

The two companies signed payments agreement in March under which Wirecard was to process transactions made via the GrabPay e-wallet.

Wirecard had not begun processing payments or signing up merchants on behalf of Grab, Southeast Asia's most valuable start-up, whose e-wallet is accepted by more than 600,000 merchants and small businesses in the region.

SINGAPORE: Southeast Asian ride-hailing and payments company Grab said it had put a partnership with scandal-hit Wirecard on hold, days after the German payments firm disclosed a $2.1 billion financial hole that threatens its future.

"We have not begun business integration work on the Wirecard partnership and we are pausing the partnership till further notice," a spokeswoman from Grab told Reuters on Wednesday in response to a query about the status of the partnership.

The two companies had struck a payments agreement in March under which Wirecard was to process transactions made via the GrabPay e-wallet, starting with markets in Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore.

Wirecard had not begun processing payments or signing up merchants on behalf of Grab, Southeast Asia's most valuable start-up, whose e-wallet is accepted by more than 600,000 merchants and small businesses in the region.

Responding to a query, the Monetary Authority of Singapore said on Tuesday that it had asked Wirecard to ensure that it keeps customer funds from its local activities in the country's banks.

This week, Wirecard's former boss was arrested on suspicion of falsifying its accounts, after the payments firm disclosed the financial hole and questioned whether trustees had actually held money on its behalf.

Germany's financial regulator also filed a fresh complaint against Wirecard with the prosecutor, saying the company's belated admission that billions were missing showed it had mis-stated its financial position between 2016 and 2018.

Jaguar will supply I-Pace EVs for Norway's new wirelessly-charged taxi service

ElectriCity

The world’s first high-powered wireless taxis will roll out in the Norwegian capital of Oslo in 2024, with the support of Jaguar Land Rover. The project, named ElectriCity, also involves Nordic taxi firm Cabonline, Norway’s largest charge point operator Fortum Recharge, and US tech developer Momentum Dynamics.

Jaguar will provide Cabonline with 25 I-Pace models for the initiative. The charging network is being specially designed so that taxi drivers can charge up without going off-route. As such, multiple charging points, at 50-75kW each, will be installed in the ground at various pick-up and drop-off points, allowing each taxi to charge while queuing for the next fare. There are no cables or physical connectors involved — charging happens automatically. This means taxis get multiple charges throughout the day, and can be returned to the rank with juice to spare, so there aren’t any driving range restrictions.

The initiative ticks a lot of boxes for those involved. Jaguar, which has recently given the I-Pace an update for 2021, has long since committed to EV innovation. Plus, it’s already partnered with transit companies in the past to push the EV agenda — last year it teamed up with Waymo, for example. Meanwhile, the city of Oslo is working on making its cab system emission free, while Norway has mandated that all new cars sold in the country by 2025 are zero emission, in order to fulfil a wider target of countrywide carbon neutrality by 2030.   Read more

How Bots Are Making The On-Demand Services Future-Proof?

This is a swipe-right world where the people want efficiency, easiness, and effortlessness in everything. Thankfully, the on-demand business model has an answer to this.

The on-demand services have become an integral part of the people’s lifestyle because of the ability to meet the diverse needs anytime, anywhere. The round of clock on-demand service also requires instant customer support for necessary assistance, which is implausible with the human staff.

That’s where AI chatbots catching up with the on-demand assistance trend through the amazingly high capability to connect the dots and respond to the customer’s queries in real-time.

According to research, the global chatbot market is expected to grow to USD 9.4 billion by 2024.

The cognitive intelligence and computing capability of AI bots are outsmarting the human intelligence and it costs quite less as opposed to hiring and training human customer service agents. This is the reason the on-demand services are warmly-embracing the bots.

The best practice of checking the bots adoption rate in on-demand solutions around us is finding the last time when you had a conversation with a human agent to handle your requirement and provide immediate support. The bots integration has indeed reached a saturation level where the interactions with bots appear as natural as chatting with human staff.
